The Military Order of the World Wars (MOWW) is a premier, patriotic Veterans Service Organization (VSO) centered on the idea embodied in its motto that "It Is Nobler To Serve Than To Be Served." The Military Order's founding in 1919 resulted from General of the Armies John J. "Blackjack" Pershing's request that his officers continue serving America after their active military service ended. MOWW promotes and encourages good citizenship, patriotic education, and military and public service.
Local chapters provide opportunity for all active duty, retired or former federally recognized officers (commissioned or warrant) of the United States to unite in programs supporting patriotic education, ROTC and JROTC, scouting, national and homeland security, and first responders. These include officers who are retired, former officers or officers who are still on active duty. This includes being on active duty for training, and serving in the Armed Forces of the United States of America (i.e., the US Army (USA), the US Navy (USN), the US Marine Corps (USMC), the US Air Force (USAF), the US Space Force (USSF), and the US Coast Guard (USCG)). Commissioned officers serving with or who have served with the National Oceanographic and Atmospheric Administration (NOAA) or the United States Public Health Service (USPHS) are also eligible for membership.
MOWW serves America's youth by hosting Youth Leadership Conferences (YLC) throughout the United States at no cost to high school students attending. These students receive patriotic education on leadership in a free society, free enterprise system concepts, principles of democracy, the Constitution and Bill of Rights, and civic responsibilities associated with preserving American rights and freedoms. Students also develop leadership, public speaking and writing skills that help them be better citizens and future leaders. The National Association of Secondary School Principals (NASSP) annually promotes MOWW's YLCs.
MOWW also sponsors awards programs for Reserve Officer Training Corps (ROTC) and Junior ROTC (JROTC) cadets, the Boy Scouts of America and the Girl Scouts of the USA. Additionally, MOWW formally honors those who excel in the national security, homeland security,, public safety, and first responder arenas. Finally, MOWW hosts "Massing of Colors" ceremonies on Flag Day, the Fourth of July, Memorial Day and Veterans Day.
Being a Companion in MOWW is more than wearing a membership pin: It is about who we are, what we represent, what we accomplish and whom we serve. We serve through our chapter programs.
We do these things and more because we are committed to serving, not merely observing. We are citizens of action who cannot rest unless we make a difference in peoples' lives and in the life of our nation by our personal service. We do these things because we are builders, not detractors. We do these things together because we are Companions who love our nation and all of its peoples. In short, our Companion members are motivated by the desire to serve others.
Companions of the G/A Omar N. Bradley - COL L. Thaxton Hanson Chapter (186) take great pride in the Chapter's Community Outreach program. One can do as much as they can devote their time to, and serving in a leadership position is never a requirement. We would be honored if you can join us and help make a difference to our Veterans and to our Community.
Not everyone is eligible to join MOWW, yet there are many individuals who believe in our Chapter’s mission and want to make a difference. Many of these individuals have chosen to become “Friends of the Chapter”: they take part in meetings, operational committees, and most importantly, our Community Outreach Programs. The only difference from that of our Companions is that these individuals are not eligible to attend Companion Only Meetings or hold a Chapter Leadership Position. Our “Friends of the Chapter” are recognized with this special designation. Ask one of our Companions how you can make a difference.
